Comparison

I tried to upload this video with two news clip last week, but the file seemed too big so I failed last time even it's only 1 minute and 40 seconds short. These two clips were from CNN and a Taiwanese news station before the hurricane. It's obvious that these two anchors had different attitude or tone to warn the residents. The right one (Taiwanese) is more casual while CNN side is more alert/cautious.

Timeline_CNN

The above image is my result of CNN starting broadcast timeline. It took me a while to color the countries after getting the information. After this time line, I will upload another graph that's related to my point. The file can be downloaded here.

A brief graph can be downloaded here. For this week, I'll investigate more according to the filtered weather disaster. The research is a continuing process.

The fact sheet of Morakot

After I posted several news footage on Typhoon Morakot, I realized I did not introduce the basic info of this typhoon/ hurricane and why it is my starting point of my project. The following is the brief fact sheet I made to formally "introduce" the typhoon. I finished the past Monday before individual meeting but did not get a chance to post.

I'll be posting more about my research tomorrow.

I uploaded again and hope this time the link/file does work.

Investigation in progress...

I have had things in my mind to work on, but I'm afraid it'll be in this situation: I am writing a post, and things don't go well or I can't make my idea fluent...
CNN seems to be an interesting topic to research on. The hurricane event was the one that triggers me to investigate similar past cases. Not sure if the same thing ever happened in the past in other countries so that I will investigate it.

ps. Am I talking alien? If so, leave me a comment.

OH~~ My nose!!

I took nyquill for past of some night to stop my runny nose. I did sleep well, but it doesn't help during the day time. Besides, I felt sleepy and dizzy after I woke up still...
Anyways, back to my topic. I have read the CNN news these days, and it is a big deal for CNN interviewed (our) the president after the hurricane. The following is a news/ periodical article (it is in Chinese though).

More info.

More about the hurricane. I followed the news after the hurricane damage after 8/8/09. And, the Taiwan president was interviewed by CNN about this issue.
This is the first time CNN was "intervene" (not sure if this is a proper word) the hurricane damage that much. I'll get the footage/ news later.

[New York Times]In Rebuilding as in the Disaster, Wealth and Class Help Define New Orleans

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/25/us/25class.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2
The article from New York Times in 2006.
After I read this news article, I found one solid fact that "money does matter" issue here. It does. I need more time to dig through this. Hope it helps me to nail down my project idea.

Above is the Katrina related news. I found this article in CNN website of how CNN warns the formation of typhoon will be dangerous, but the Taiwanese news broadcast did not pay too much attention about it until the serious landfall and flood occurred later.
The following is a quote from this news that CNN already warned that the typhoon will be causing disasters.
"He (CNN meteorologist Kevin Corriveau) predicted its impact would be massive. "This storm has already dumped about 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain in the central and southern part of the island, and they're still expecting another 500 (20 inches) to 800 millimeters (32 inches) of rain over the next 24 to 48 hours," he said."

(This is written in Chinese. A note for myself.)

By the way, there will be an another typhoon hitting Taiwan this coming Wednesday (tw.news.yahoo.com). We'll keep watching this matter and updating the news here.

Wiki was surprisingly resourceful

Enough with hurricane (or typhoon) in Taiwan, I used wiki as starter research for the basic info I needed to know about Hurricane Katrina. Not sure if I was already back to school in Tennessee or not, but it was a super strong hurricane I had heard from both Taiwan and America. I will keep on investigate where the system was "falling apart."

A few notes

http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/八八水災
A general info about the flood.

database of all past typhoons hitting Taiwan. There was one recently 10/3 - 10/6. It did not cause a lot of damage. (not as much as MORAKOT did)

photos of how landscape changed before and after Morakot typhoon.

(just got back from work. will post more tomorrow...)

New Direction

The picture shows the huge disaster of "MORAKOT" typhoon in 8/8/2009.
I decided not to start out with building wearable technology. In fact, the topic I am currently studying is the "weather danger." Not the cause of weather danger we face today, but there is a "system" which is not efficient enough to prevent tragedy happens such as hurricane and floods. I focused on the area of my hometown, Taiwan. Recently, there was one major typhoon (or hurricane) that traumatized the southern (rural area) part of the island. It is said this typhoon is the most disastrous during this past 50 years.

I looked at the news again about this "MORAKOT" typhoon. And, the Central Weather Bureau started to spread out the alert for the typhoon coming. However, the local news broadcast did not take it serious so did the people. CNN in Asia did warn Taiwan to start preventing this typhoon. The news did not show how local government handle the alert well to the rural people so that huge landslide and flood happened within two days. We actually have pretty developed news broadcast system; however, the "system" and the government happened to take the alert from CNN and Central Weather Bureau lightly. This is the point or place where things fall apart. I am starting to compare the typhoon and Katrina, and see the places where it does relate to each other.

Something about wearables...

http://community.wreg.com/_Winter-Scarf-offering-high-quality-and-function/blog/776676/96304.html

I came across to this blog post. The first paragraph got my interest to further build my idea of wearable technology.
Scarves serves the simple functionality: protection from cold. Recently, scarves are not only for winter, but also designed for spring and fall by changing the material that fits the weather.
So, for my future project, I would like to embed a simple device onto a scarf that maintains body temperature to protect people from sudden changed weather.

Some thoughts about my wearable technology

For me, clothes are the equipment to maintain body temperature. Also, the season is transferring to winter, and the temperature sudden dropped from 71F (nicely warm) to 60 this past Wednesday morning. I realized that people started coughing on subway, which makes me alert about thte flu season coming back.
The following are my key words about my coming wearable technology:
maintaining body temperature
device/ technology helps maintaining body temperature
Weather
Climate change
environmental change
flu
disease
